Take The Parent’’s Pledge For Safe Teen Driving

Do you have a teen driver, or will you have one soon? If so, you need to start thinking about how you’re going to help them become a safe and well-prepared driver. According to the CDC, “Car crashes are the #1 killer of teens, taking about 3,000 young lives every year. That’s 8 teen deaths each day that can be prevented” (Source). One way that you can commit to going out of your way to prepare your teen driver for the road is to take the Parent’s Pledge for Safe Teen Driving from the CDC. Here’s the pledge.

Let us know when you’ve signed your pledge form. Write us a brief message on our Facebook page about why you decided to sign it!

Share The Road: A Reminder About Motorcyclists

Are you paying attention to the person on the motorcycle next to, in front of, or behind you? We recently came across a great poster that we wanted to share with you about Motorcycle awareness. Here it is:

Here are some tips that you can follow directly from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration:

  • “Motorcycles are vehicles with the same rights and privileges as any vehicle on the roadway.
  • Allow the motorcyclist a full lane width. Although it may seem as though there is enough room in the traffic lane for an automobile and a motorcycle, remember the motorcycle needs the room to maneuver safely. Do not share the lane.
  • Motorcycles are small and may be difficult to see. Motorcycles have a much smaller profile than vehicles, which can make it more difficult to judge the speed and distance of an approaching motorcycle.
  • Always signal your intentions before changing lanes or merging with traffic. This allows the motorcyclist to anticipate traffic flow and find a safe lane position.
  • Remember that motorcyclists are often hidden in a vehicle’s blind spot or missed in a quick look due to their smaller size. Always make a visual check for motorcycles by checking mirrors and blind spots before entering or leaving a lane of traffic and at intersections.
  • Don’t be fooled by a flashing turn signal on a motorcycle – motorcycle signals usually are not self-canceling and riders sometimes forget to turn them off. Wait to be sure the motorcycle is going to turn before you proceed.
  • Remember that road conditions that are minor annoyances to motorists can pose major hazards to motorcyclists. Motorcyclists may change speed or adjust their position within a lane suddenly in reaction to road and traffic conditions such as potholes, gravel, wet or slippery surfaces, pavement seams, railroad crossings, and grooved pavement.
  • Allow more following distance, three or four seconds, following a motorcycle so the motorcyclist has enough time to maneuver or stop in an emergency. In dry conditions motorcycles can stop more quickly than cars.”

End The Dangerous Practice of Distracted Driving TODAY

Distracted driving is a very serious and dangerous problem that exists on the roads today.

According to the U.S Department of Transportation, “In 2009, 5,474 people were killed in U.S. roadways and an estimated additional 448,000 were injured in motor vehicle crashes that were reported to have involved distracted driving” (Source).

It’s important to always be aware of the problem, and to teach the future drivers in your family about how to avoid distracted driving. To help, we’re outlining six ways to prevent distracted driving. Here they are:

1. Set a good example for your children. The best way to help your teens to become a safe driver is to become one yourself. Practice safe and responsible driving in an effort to prepare your children for their own driving experience.

2. Have your family sign a pledge or contract about safe driving. It’s a good idea to make sure everyone in your family is on the same page and understands the rules when it comes to driving. There is a great contract you can use here.

3. Talk to your future drivers about the dangers of distracted driving. Make sure your children know about the dangers and consequences of distracted driving. To get started, use this brochure.

4. Educate yourself. Stay educated on new rules, regulations, and laws related to distracted driving. Make sure you have a wealth of knowledge about how to prevent distracted driving, and why  it is important.

5. Establish rules. Make sure your teen drivers understand the rules. Talk with them about what rules they think are fair, and what the consequences should be if the rules are broken.

6. Teach others. Teach others about distracted driving. Even if your teen driver is making an effort to drive without distraction, it doesn’t mean other drivers are doing the same. Go out of your way to spread the word.
